The cats were not clans. They had no sense of honor, of family. They were mindless warriors. Bent only to destroy.
The forests would ring with the shrieks and screams of bloodthirsty cats.
But despite the battles, the clans were large. Over 40 cats in each clan, many nameless and trained only to kill. It was a terrible time, a dark time.
Known as the Blood Ages.
One cat, Desolation, was worse than the rest. He was angry all the time, and would physically eat the cats he killed. He was feared by all cats, and because of this he had legions of cats under his command. He wanted to demolish the other cats, leaving only the strongest and most bloodthirsty.
He would of course, lead them all.
The other cats found out about his horrible plans, and banded together against all their instincts.
When Desolation and his army of over 80 Rogues and Loners came, they met him with their own group of 78 cats.
The battle was like no other, they fought on the shores of the lake and they say the lake itself turned red from all the blood.
But despite their determination to survive, the cats were falling fast to the blood stained claws of Desolation's minions.
They were losing.
Cat after cat would fall to the ground; it's life's blood seeping into the ground and the lake.
The cries of pain and horror filled the air and they say that just the memory of such a sound is enough to break your spine under the pressure of it.
These cats had no Starclan. They believed that when they died they would be tortured for all eternity for failing their lives in a pit of fire. Much like Hell.
But one she-cat who fought against Desolation's side stood still for a moment, in the middle of the battle, and watched as her friends fell around her, gasping their last breaths. For a moment she thought she could see ghostly figures coming and licking the dead bodies, and leading the souls of her companions up to the skies.
With one thought, the she-cat sealed the fate for her side.
"Oh cats of the stars... guide us!"
The figures turned their heads, all to look at her. A huge black tom came and touched noses with her.
"You have found us. The times have been long. We are ready."
Seconds later, a rip in the sky appeared. A bright light shone to all the cats, and for a moment the battle was stalled. Then out of the stars came hundreds of silvery cats. They swept through the battle, felling every rogue led by Desolation that they could find.
It took only two minutes for the battle to end; only Desolation was left standing of his tribe.
The remaining clan cats howled and purred their thanks and appreciated to the star cats, and vowed that they would never forget them.
The star cats turned, and floated back up into the sky where the rip disappeared, and the evening once more resumed.
Desolation snarled in anger and fury, vowing to the star cats and to the clan cats that he would ruin them all. With this, he turned and ran.
The remaining 40 clan cats set out to re-build their lives, realizing that by working together they had done more than they ever would have when fighting each other.
And so began the four clans. The cats separated into groups depending on personality and strengths, and ever since that day the cats believed in Starclan and worshiped them. For without the cats of Starclan, they would all have been slain by Desolation and his tribe and blood would have completely ruled the lake.
After the battle, the cats returned to the lake side to remove their loved one's bodies. But horror and shock met them.
Desolation had had his revenge. During the night, he had pushed everybody into the lake.
The corpses sat at the bottom, rotting and staying up through the water at the sky.
Present Time.
The clans are strong, and have grown into their own territories.
The battle of Desolation and his tribe of cats against the ancestors of the clan cats has been long forgotten, nothing more than a tale for elders to tell. No cat remembers the times when horror was the only emotion the cats could feel.
No one remembered the cats coming out of the sky and destroying Desolation's army.
But even though the clan cats may have forgotten, Desolation never did.
He lived on for almost five years after the battle and sired one kit. To this kit he passed on all of his knowledge. This kit passed it on to his one kit, and so on and so on.
A rogue has entered the vicinity of the clans, and he carries the blood of Desolation and the training and knowledge that his father and his father's father, and so on received before him.
He comes to destroy the clans. To do what his great relative Desolation could not do.
Alone he stares into the waters of the lake, knowing what lies underneath the waves.
"We will have our revenge."
He snarls, his ratty face creasing in a smirk.
A TIME OF DARKNESS APPROACHES.
A NEW REGIME ARISES.
PEACE WILL BE SHATTERED.
ALLIANCES BROKEN.
AND DEATH ITSELF WILL RISE FROM THE SHADOWS.
